If you’re really good at drawing, or just want to get better at it, there are quite a few apps that you can utilize. You’d be surprised to know how many good drawing and sketching apps are out there. In this article, we’ll highlight some of the best drawing apps for Android, well, at least our favorites. You’ll find 9 applications included in the list below, these are only our favorites, there are many more available in the Google Play Store.
Do note that the apps below are not listed in any specific order. You’ll find some additional information here about each of these applications. There are descriptions included, for each of the apps, along with some screenshots / video content, price tags, required versions of Android, and so on. Each of these apps is interesting in its own way, so if you’re interested in drawing, read on.

ibis Paint X is a really compelling application that is suited for pretty much everyone. There are a lot of tools at your disposal here, including more than 2000 different brushes to choose from. In addition to that, it offers over 800 fonts, 75 filters, 46 screentones, 27 blending modes, and so on. This app even allows you to record your drawing process to share, or check out later on.
The app allows for a rather smooth drawing experience at 60 FPS, while it does include layer features. You can actually add as many layers as you need, while a handy clipping feature for images is also included. You can also access various layer commands, and there’s also a setting for layer names. There is a paid version of this app available as well, in case you’re interested. You can stick to the free version, though.

Tayasui Sketches app is also really user-friendly. it is trying to mimic the feel of pen and paint on paper, and it has a really neat slide cabinet interface that holds all the available brushes. There are also a number of gesture controls that you can, and should utilize. Using them you can quickly undo, redo, zoom, and so on. You can basically do a ton of actions quickly, without the need for tapping or searching for options.
The app has over 20 tools that you’re familiar with if you’re an artist, plus it has layers support. You can import photos here, while the brushes editor is also available. The color eyedropper tool is included, and so much more. This app is free to use, though you’ll need the ‘Pro’ version in order to access all the features. Layer editing is not available in the free version, for example.
Download Tayasui Sketches
If you need some more advanced drawing tools, the Concepts app may suit you. The free version is already packed with a ton of tools, such as five-layer support, vector brush tools, and so on. The ‘Pro’ version does expand the advanced tools support quite a bit. It adds some CAD-style tools, transformation tools, and so much more. All the basic stuff is available in the free version, and some more advanced tools as well.
The app offers realistic pencils, pens, and brushes that do respond to pressure, tilt and velocity. You can also access a tool wheel / bar which is customizable. In it, you can place your favorite tools and presets for quick access. The app also allows you to personalize your canvas, tools, gestures… well, basically everything. Drag and drop support is included, and much more. You can even export images, PDFs, and vectors.
MediBang Paint is one of the best apps for drawing comic books and manga content. It comes loaded with brushes, fonts, pre-made backgrounds, and so on. It is also worth noting that this app is not available on Android only, you can also use it on iOS, macOS and Windows. Over 100 free brushes are included in the app, and a number of colorful spectacles for you to use.
You have a really compelling selection here, actually, including airbrush, pencil, watercolor, G Pen, mapping pen, fiat brush, round brush, acrylic, school pen, turnip pen, drawing pen, and so on. You can get access to 850 tones, textures, backgrounds, and word balloons, all that for free. Layers are also available, and many more options. Do note that this app is free for the first 60 days, after which you’ll be required to pay up if you’d like to continue using it.

Sketchbook is a really nice-looking application which is ideal for making sketches. There are a ton of brush types to choose from here. Those brush types include pencil markers, airbrushes, smear, and more. Those brushes are also highly-customizable, so you can get exactly what you want / need. Guides rulers, and stroke tools are also included, just to make you as precise as possible.
Layer support is also included, with a full complement of blend modes. The interface is top notch in the app, and that considerably boosts this application. It’s not only functional, but it looks great as well. You can also save your work to Dropbox or iCloud, if you want, and share it, of course. The app is free to download and use, and it’s actually quite popular, amongst the most popular sketching apps on Android.
Adobe Illustrator Draw is yet another really popular app. This app comes from Adobe, as its name says, and it comes with quite a few features. The app does offer support for layers, and there are five different pen tips at your disposal. You can customize each of those pen tips, though, so that you get exactly what you need. The app even allows you to zoom in really, really far, up to 64x.
Thanks to such features, you can really get a truly detailed image with a bit of effort on your part. You can rename, duplicate, merge, and adjust each individual layer here. The app does allow you to export and share your work, and you can use it with other Adobe products that way. The app is free to download and use, though you’ll need the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription to access all features.

LayerPaint HD is a drawing app packed with features. Now, this is a paid app, but you have to do a one-time payment, and you’re good to go. Ads are also not included, of course. It is one of the most detailed drawing apps for Android, that’s for sure. It includes all the basics you might have expected, plus wacom tablet support, PSD import/export, foreground color brush, transparent color brush, pallete controls, a layer mode, and so much more.
There are a number of filters included here, and also the watercolor edge effect. You can also utilize quite a few keyboard shortcuts here, if you’d like. They’re not customizable, but if you do attach a keyboard to your smartphone/tablet, these may be really useful. Now, one downside is that this app is made for larger devices. That kind of makes sense for all drawing apps, but in this one it’s particularly obvious due to its UI and everything.
Download LayerPaint HD
If you’re looking to try out drawing on a smartphone/tablet display for the first time, try out PaperColor. This app will ease you in on digital drawing, if you’re transitioning from paper. It tries to mimic real-life drawing, basically. There are a number of different paintbrushes, and tons of colors to choose from. This app does not offer as many features as some others on the list, but that’s perfectly fine, not many people need them.
The ruler is included here, and so is the eraser tool. You can import images via this app, and then draw over them. We’re just scratching the surface here. The UI is also really nice, and great for pretty much everyone. The app is most suitable for those of you who don’t need all the features under the stars, and those of you who are used to drawing/sketching on paper.
If you like pixel art, this is the app for you. This is the very best app for creating pixel art that we’ve stumbled upon. Pixel art is not for everyone, though, if you don’t know what it is, Google it. This is not your regular drawing app, not at all. It provides you with a zoomable grid, and allows you to create images by filling in those grids. You’ll need to fill in grid boxes with colors, of course, while creating something along the way.
The way it’s written, you may think this s is a coloring book, but it’s nowhere near that. undo, redo, and zoom options are all here, and you can choose between a number of different colors as well. The app allows you to export your work without a problem, or share it directly to some other app. It works really well, and it also has an interesting UI design, appropriate for the app type.
