Every year, the debate over who does and does not get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a heated one. And it is one that frustrates some people still in the game as well. One of those is New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who thinks that the lack of criteria for getting into the Hall of Fame is not good for the sport.
“The Hall of Fame’s out of my control, and since there’s no criteria for the Hall of Fame, it’s really hard to even have a conversation about it because it’s not based on anything,” Belichick said, according to CBS Sports. “It’s your opinion on a great player, my opinion on a great player, somebody else’s opinion on a great player. I don’t know what that means. When there’s no criteria, you can make a case for everybody.”
Belichick’s comments are of note this year because two of his former players — Richard Seymour and Vince Wilfork — are semifinalists to be inducted in 2022. But because of the lack of criteria to get in, Seymour and Wilfork might not end up making the cut this year, despite having some incredibly impressive resumes.
The 21st overall pick out of Miami in 2004, Wilfork wrecked opposing offensive lines from his defensive tackle spot for years. Wilfork was a first-team All-Pro pick in 2012 and a second-team All-Pro pick three times, while also making it to five Pro Bowls during his time with the Patriots.
Seymour was the sixth overall pick out of Georgia in 2001 and also had a legendary career in New England. Seymour was a first-team All-Pro selection three times, second-team All-Pro twice, while also making it to seven Pro Bowls. Seymour is part of the Patriots’ Hall of Fame, was on the 50th Anniversary Team, the All-2000s Team, and the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
Most would think that those resumes could easily get the two Patriots legends into the Hall of Fame this year but it will be no easy task to get in, due to the competition that they face. Of the 26 semifinalists up for consideration, the likes of Ronde Barber, Jared Allen, Devin Hester and more are also up for consideration. The Hall of Fame selections will be announced Feb. 10 at 9 p.m. ET during the week of the Super Bowl.

If inducted, Seymour and Wilfork would join a legendary list of players to be in the Hall of Fame as former Patriots. Other notable players on that list include Junior Seau and Randy Moss, as well as former head coach Bill Parcells.
